
A Real-World Look at Halogen Quartz Heating Tubes
If you’re dealing with high-intensity heat, you’ve probably come across halogen quartz tubes. Essentially, we’re talking about a tungsten filament tucked inside a high-purity quartz shell and filled with a specific halogen gas mix. Here is why that matters: the gas stops the filament from evaporating too fast. It means the lamps last longer, and we can crank the temperature way higher than you’d get with a basic quartz lamp.
Let’s talk power and heat
The amount of heat you get comes down to your voltage and wattage. If you’re using a high-voltage setup—like a 400V unit—you can run longer tubes without the current dropping off. It’s the best way to get a steady, even heat across a large area. Now, if you go with a 2500W tube, things get hot. Fast. But be careful. That kind of intensity puts a lot of stress on your reflectors. If your housing can’t breathe or move that ambient heat away, you’re going to end up with warped mounting brackets. Not a fun fix.
The build and the “plug-in” part
We use fused quartz for the envelope because it handles thermal shock like a champ. You won’t see it crack the moment the temperature spikes. Some of these tubes also have a special coating. This shifts the light spectrum so the heat actually sinks deeper into materials like PET or HDPE, rather than just scorching the surface. As for the connections, we usually stick with R7s or Sk15. They’re basically drop-in replacements for most industrial ovens. They fit tight, which is exactly what you want—it stops the terminals from arcing when you’re pushing high current.
Using them on the floor
These are the go-to for PET bottle blowing and shrink wrapping. The magic here is the short-wave radiation. It hits the plastic directly. You don’t have to waste time heating up all the air in the room first. It makes your cycle times plummet. Plus, when your PID controller tweaks the power, the response is almost instant. One last tip:keep the glass clean. Seriously. A single fingerprint or a smudge of oil on the quartz creates a hot spot. That’s usually how the glass cracks or the tube burns out way before its time. Keep a clean cloth handy and you’ll be fine.
