
Why Your Quartz Lamps Aren’t Behaving (And How to Fix It)
Here is a little secret about quartz lamps: the spec sheet lies. Or, at least, it doesn’t tell you the whole story. You can buy two lamps with the exact same voltage and wattage, plug them in, and get two completely different results. If you’re just matching numbers on a page, you’re missing the part that actually matters—how the heat actually moves. The “Warm-up” Struggle Think about how fast your lamp hits its target temperature. That “rise curve” is everything. If your lamp drags its feet getting up to heat, your whole production line slows down. You’re just sitting there waiting. It usually comes down to the filament’s mass and how pure the quartz is. We spend a lot of time tweaking our filaments so the jump from electricity to infrared heat happens instantly. No lagging. Just heat. The Headache of Cold Spots Then there’s the uniformity issue. You’ve probably seen it—where the middle of the tube is screaming hot, but the ends are barely warm. It’s usually caused by sloppy filament winding or quartz walls that aren’t a consistent thickness. If you’re blowing PET bottles or curing film, a tiny 10°C difference can ruin a batch. You get warping, uneven shrinkage, and a lot of wasted material. We don’t guess on this. We use thermal imaging to map the heat footprint and make sure it’s flat across the board. The Balancing Act Now, you might think, “Why not just crank up the wattage to get it hotter, faster?” Well, there’s a catch. Pushing too much power puts a massive amount of stress on the seal where the quartz meets the metal. Go too hard, too fast, and you’ll burn out your filament way sooner than you should. It’s all about the balance. You have to play with your power settings and your cooling airflow so the lamp doesn’t accidentally cook its own housing. If you’re using Henruite lamps, do yourself a favor and run a side-by-side test. Compare what the lamp is actually doing against what the paperwork says.
