
Getting Your Plastic Heating Right: It’s More Than Just the Datasheet
Here is the thing about spec’ing out heating lamps for plastic processing: the wattage and voltage on that spec sheet are only half the story. I’ve seen it happen a dozen times. An engineer swaps out lamps because the numbers on paper match perfectly, but then they start the run and everything goes sideways. Suddenly, their PET preforms have cold spots in some places and scorched zones in others. It’s frustrating, and it wastes a lot of material. The race to the target temperature Think about the “rise curve”—basically, how fast the lamp actually gets hot. If your lamps hit the target temperature even two seconds faster than what you’re using now, your hourly output jumps. It sounds small, but those seconds add up fast. We spend a lot of time tweaking the filament density so you get that quick ramp-up without accidentally shocking the quartz glass and popping the lamp. Closing the gap on uniformity This is where the cheap lamps usually fall apart. If the middle of your tube is 50°C hotter than the ends, your plastic is going to stretch unevenly. It’s a nightmare for quality control. We focus on the precision of the filament winding to flatten that heat profile. You get a steady, consistent flow of heat from one end to the other, which means way less scrap hitting the floor during the blowing process. The trade-offs you should know about Now, pushing more watts into a shorter tube isn’t a magic fix. It puts a lot more stress on your reflectors. If your reflectors are pitted, oxidized, or just dirty, that heat isn’t bouncing back into the plastic. You’re basically just paying for electricity to heat up the air around your machine.
