
A No-Nonsense Guide to Halogen Infrared Heater Tubes
If you need heat—and you need it now—halogen tubes are your best bet. They’re basically high-intensity shortwave infrared sources. We build them with a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz envelope and fill the whole thing with a halogen gas mix. Why the gas? It stops the filament from evaporating too fast. That means we can push the tube to much higher temperatures without the whole thing just burning out on you. Talking Power and Voltage Here’s the thing about voltage and wattage: it’s all about how much heat you’re throwing at your target. If you go with a high-voltage tube (like 230V or 400V), you’re really looking for a specific amount of energy packed into every millimeter of the tube. High-wattage tubes get things hot fast. It’s exactly what you want for PET preforms or shrink wrapping. Just a heads-up: make sure your power supply and wiring can actually handle that peak current. If you get a voltage drop, you’ll end up with uneven heating, and that’s a headache nobody wants. The Hardware: Quartz and Connectors We use high-purity quartz for the outer shell because it lets that shortwave radiation fly right through without getting trapped. Depending on what you’re heating, you can go with clear quartz or a coated version. The coating basically tweaks the light spectrum so it hits your material more effectively. As for the plugs, we usually stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re standard, they fit tight, and they don’t wiggle loose when the metal expands from the heat. The Trade-offs (The Honest Part) The speed is incredible. You flip a switch, and you have heat. But there’s a catch. That quartz is fragile. Like, really fragile. If you touch it with your bare hands, the oils from your skin can create a hot spot. One fingerprint can be enough to crack the tube while it’s running. Plus, these things put off a ton of ambient heat. You can’t just plug them in and forget it. You’ll need solid cooling fans and good ventilation, otherwise, your control electronics are going to bake.
