If you’ve ever dealt with ink bleed or paint that just won’t stick, you know the struggle. You need that ink to set now. That’s where halogen infrared (IR) lamps come in. They give you that punch of heat needed to flash off solvents or cure UV inks quickly, all without cooking your substrate into a crisp. The Nitty-Gritty on Heat and Power Inside these lamps, you’ve got a tungsten filament sitting in a mix of halogen gas. This is the secret sauce—it stops the filament from evaporating too fast, which means we can crank the heat way up. When you’re picking a lamp for your line, look at the wattage-to-length ratio. That tells you how dense the heat is. If you’re running a fast conveyor, you want high-wattage tubes so the heat ramps up instantly. Just a heads-up: make sure your power supply matches the lamp’s voltage (usually 220V or 380V). If you get that wrong, you’re just asking for a premature burnout. Quartz, Connectors, and a Little Trick We use high-purity quartz glass for the tubes. Why? Because standard glass would just shatter under the thermal shock of turning these things on and off. Depending on your setup, you’ll probably see R7s or Sk15 connectors. The R7s is a simple push-in fit, which is a lifesaver when you’re in the middle of maintenance and just want to swap a bulb and get back to work. Plus, some of these lamps have a gold or aluminum coating. It’s a clever bit of design that bounces the IR radiation forward toward the paint instead of letting the heat bleed into the machine frame. Making it Work in the Real World The best part? You can shrink your curing time from minutes down to seconds. It means your ovens don’t have to be the size of a warehouse. But here’s the thing: these lamps are picky. If your reflectors are dirty or pitted, you’re wasting a huge chunk of your heat. And for the love of everything,keep those quartz tubes clean. A single fingerprint or a smudge of oil can create a hot spot, and that’s how you end up with a cracked tube.
