
Getting Your Paper Dry: The Lowdown on Shortwave Halogen Lamps
When you’re running an industrial paper line, you can’t afford to wait around for moisture to evaporate. That’s why we build our halogen lamps to hit the paper hard and fast. Instead of just warming up the air around the machine—which is a waste of time—these use shortwave infrared. It basically punches the heat straight into the paper. It’s efficient. It’s fast. And it gets the job done without the fluff. Let’s talk power. To keep those high-speed lines moving, we pack a lot of wattage into a small space. We usually lean toward high-voltage setups because it lets you keep your wiring lean and mean without sacrificing heat. But here’s the thing: you’ve got to be precise with your transformer. If you push too much voltage into the tube, you’ll fry the filament in a matter of hours. It’s a delicate balance. The build quality We wrap the heating element in high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because quartz doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly, and it lets that shortwave IR slide right through. For the connections, we stick with R7s or SK15. They’re standard for a reason—they just fit. Plus, they create a tight seal. When your machinery starts vibrating (which it will), you don’t want your terminals arcing and sparking. Making it actually work in your shop You can hook these up to a PID controller to manage your temperature zones. This is a lifesaver because it keeps you from accidentally scorching your paper. But a couple of warnings. First, keep your reflectors clean. If they’re pitted or covered in grime, you’re throwing away a huge chunk of your heat. And please, check your cooling fans. These lamps get incredibly hot. If you don’t have enough airflow around the ends, the heat will just soak into the connector housing and melt your lifespan right down the drain.
